How reporting defaults apply
Your reporting defaults change how figures look everywhere in Cairn, for everyone in your firm:
- Base currency is the currency shown when an amount has no currency of its own. Amounts that do have their own currency keep it: a fund's committed capital shows in the fund's currency, and a portfolio company's financials show in the company's own currency. Cairn doesn't convert between currencies.
- Number and date formats apply to every table, card, and chart.
- Metrics you turn off (for example DPI) disappear from dashboards, company pages, and the Portfolio table.
How fund access works
A member limited to specific funds sees:
- Those funds, and their LPs, capital calls, distributions, management fees, notices, and statements.
- Portfolio companies linked to at least one of those funds, along with their cap tables, documents, and financials.
A company held by several funds is visible to anyone with access to any of them.
A portfolio company that isn't linked to any fund is visible only to members with All funds access. Admins see a banner on Portfolio when companies need linking. Link a company from its page, under Company info › Funds.
A member limited to specific funds must choose at least one of their funds when adding a portfolio company.
How security policies are enforced
- Two-factor authentication: when required, a member who hasn't set it up is asked to do so at their next sign-in. The Security page shows whether every member has it set up.
- Session timeout: activity in any open Cairn tab counts, so working in one tab keeps your other tabs signed in.
- Allowed email domains: applies to new invitations only. Existing members with other email domains keep their access.
⚠️ [NEEDS REVIEW] Whether allowed email domains should also apply to existing members hasn't been confirmed; today they're only checked when someone is invited.
How KPI alerts work
Alerts come from each active portfolio company's latest confirmed figures. Exited and written-off companies never raise alerts.
| Alert | Raised when | Severity |
|---|---|---|
| Runway below | Runway (reported, or cash ÷ burn) is shorter than the threshold | At risk |
| Revenue down by more than | Average revenue over the last three months is down more than the threshold against the three months before | At risk |
| Monthly burn up by more than | Average burn over the last three months is up more than the threshold against the three months before | Watch |
| No new figures for more than | The latest confirmed figures are older than the threshold | Watch |
- Where alerts appear: under the bell at the top of every page, with a count of open alerts. Each alert links to its company and says which month's figures it comes from.
- Fund access applies: members limited to certain funds only see alerts for companies linked to their funds.
- Dismissing is personal: dismissing an alert hides it for you only. It comes back if the company's next confirmed figures still cross the line.
- When alerts update: alerts are checked whenever you open the bell, so new figures show up as soon as they're confirmed.
- Email: alerts appear in Cairn only for now. Email alerts are listed as coming soon on the Notifications page.
What's recorded in the audit log
The audit log records sign-ins, exports, permission and role changes, team changes, settings changes, billing events, integration events, confirmed portfolio company financials, and LP report events (letters created, drafted with Cairn Intelligence, and approved). Each entry shows when it happened, who did it, and what changed.
Billing
Settings › Billing shows your current plan, its price, and your usage (portfolio companies, funds, LPs, and data rooms processed), alongside the other plans. Changing plans yourself isn't available yet: the plan buttons say self-serve plan changes are coming soon, and Talk to sales is available for larger plans.
