Diligence — Advanced & Customization

Upload limits

Each document you upload must be 25 MB or smaller. There's no restriction on file type for uploading, previewing (PDF/image), or downloading.

What Cairn Intelligence can read

Financial Extraction, Cairn Thesis, and IC Memo generation only work on documents the product can read as text: PDF, Word (.docx), and Excel (.xlsx) files. Other file types (PowerPoint, images, etc.) can still be uploaded, previewed, and downloaded, but they're skipped when generating any of the three — only your readable documents are used. Cairn Intelligence reads up to 20 documents and up to 80,000 characters total per generation; if your documents exceed that, the extras are noted as skipped or truncated in the generated content's source list.

How citations are verified

Every finding Cairn Thesis, Investment Brief, and IC Memo produce must cite an exact quote from one of your documents. Before a generation is saved, the product checks every quote against the actual document text it was given — if a quote can't be matched, the whole generation is rejected and your previously saved result is left unchanged. This means a failed generation never silently replaces a good one with a worse one; you just try again.

When a Thesis or IC Memo goes stale

A Thesis or IC Memo is marked stale (with a banner telling you to regenerate) when any of the following change since it was last generated:

  • Your workspace's documents (added, removed, or re-uploaded).
  • For IC Memo specifically: the Thesis or Financial Extraction it was built from has since been regenerated.

A stale Thesis or Memo isn't deleted or hidden — it stays exactly as generated. Regenerate it whenever you want the current sources reflected.

Versioning and editing

Cairn Thesis and IC Memo keep every version you generate — nothing is overwritten. Analyst notes and, for Thesis, your edited assumption interpretations carry forward automatically into each new version, so regenerating never loses your own input. Editing an older version in the version history isn't supported; switch to the latest version to make changes, or regenerate.

Financial Extraction is not versioned — each run replaces the previous result, since it represents your current best read of the company's financials rather than a dated analysis.

Office document preview and Google Docs Viewer

Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files don't render natively in your browser, so Diligence previews them using Google Docs Viewer. When you preview one of these file types, you'll see this notice:

Previewed via Google Docs Viewer — this document is sent to Google to render.

If a document is highly sensitive, download it and open it locally instead of using inline preview.

⚠️ [NEEDS REVIEW] Confirm with your compliance/legal team whether this is acceptable for your firm's most sensitive diligence materials before relying on inline Office preview for those documents.
